Meet Dr. Miguel Cunha – The foot surgeon changing the way we value our feet

Dr. Miguel Cunha is a highly trained and skilled surgeon specializing in all disorders of the foot and ankle. Dr. Cunha graduated from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia in 2007, completed his surgical training as Chief Resident at Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C., in 2010, and is now accepting new patients at his practice in New York City. He has been voted one of the top doctors in the United States and top three Podiatrists in New York City since 2018, has appeared on CNBC, Time Magazine, Martha Stewart Living , New York Magazine , Women’s Health , and Men’s Health .

Dr. Cunha and his team of highly trained, dedicated surgeons treat all foot and ankle disorders. They offer both surgical and non-surgical treatments for dermatological and sports medicine related conditions, such as bunions and hammer toes. Dr. Cunha is an expert in cosmetic, minimally invasive, and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle. He specializes in treating runners’ injuries such as neuromas, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and stress fractures. He offers leading edge therapeutic techniques including extracorporeal shockwave therapy, cryosurgery, TENEX, and regenerative medicine. He treats each patient with care and compassion.

Dr. Cunha has always been fascinated by the human body. He was passionate about health and wellness, and enjoyed helping people improve their lives. Initially he wanted to pursue a career in dermatology, but because he enjoyed working with his hands, he naturally developed an interest in surgery. Eventually, he decided to pursue Podiatry because it allowed him to become both a dermatologist and surgeon of the foot. As a podiatrist, being able to alleviate pain and suffering gives Dr. Cunha a tremendous sense of gratification. He also loves the creativity and artistry required of surgery; transforming a foot that is injured or deformed into one that is both anatomically healthy, function and beautiful—is an extraordinary achievement.

Dr. Cunha founded Gotham Footcare in 2012, after realizing that the market for foot care needed an upgrade. His company was born out of his desire to create a place where patients could receive compassionate care and exceptional results with the most advanced technology and state-of-the-art facilities in New York City. He now has two locations—one on Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan, the other with an out-patient surgical facility in the Financial District at the Woolworth building.

Dr. Cunha is a board-certified podiatric physician and surgeon with a tremendous love for wisdom and philosophy, especially the Japanese philosophies of Kodawari and Kaizen. These philosophies mean relentless pursuit of perfection and continuous improvement in all aspects of life through incremental positive changes that result in significant improvements. Dr. Cunha practices these philosophies daily not only professionally and personally, but also spiritually and in doing so he feels productive, well balanced, and fulfilled. Dr. Cunha is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the New York Podiatric Medical Association, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and is Board Certified in Podiatric Medicine.
